Tony Visconti
Tony Visconti is one of the most influential record producers in the history of popular music. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has shaped the sound of landmark records by David Bowie, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy, Mary Hopkin, Sparks, Angelique Kidjo, and many others. His work with Bowie alone, from the 1969 debut album through to Blackstar in 2016, represents one of the longest and most celebrated artist-producer partnerships in recorded music.
As a producer, Tony is known for his technical innovation as much as his musical instincts. He pioneered the use of ambient microphone techniques and was an early adopter of the Eventide Harmonizer, which became a signature element of his sound. His approach to complex multi-track tape layering helped define the aesthetic ambition of records like T. Rex's Electric Warrior and Bowie's Scary Monsters, (and Super Creeps), and his willingness to push the boundaries of studio technology has informed every phase of his career.
Tony holds an honorary doctorate from Kingston University, where he is also a visiting professor. In 2016, the university partnered with him to relaunch its Kingston Hill recording facility as Visconti Studio, with acoustics redesigned by ADG and a hybrid analogue-digital setup reflecting his commitment to both traditional and modern production methods.
Since the studio's opening, Tony has been involved in its work in several ways. He led the inaugural Winterschool residency in 2017, a week-long intensive programme in which he worked directly with students and researchers on recording and production. He co-produced Stylophonika (2022), the debut album of the Kingston University Stylophone Orchestra, and recorded his own album Apollo 80 at the facility. He has also taken part in the studio's "In Conversation" series, sharing his experience with public audiences.
Tony continues to support the studio and its mission of bringing professional practice and education together. As well as his production work at the facility, he has served as a curriculum consultant on the BA (Hons) Music Technology and MA Music Production courses, and contributes guest lectures, workshops, and seminars with students from Kingston School of Art. When he brings professional projects to the studio, our interns and engineers-in-training gain direct experience of working at the highest level.
He is based in New York, so his involvement is occasional rather than permanent, but the partnership remains active and his influence on everything we do at the studio runs deep.
